Why I Built A Mental Performance System, Not Another Motivational Program:

I want to tell you why more self-help books, more motivational videos, and more willpower will never be enough to turn a default mindset into a designed one.

But if your goal is to consistently perform under pressure, stay locked in when it counts, and be the kind of person who shows up no matter what life throws at you, then you deserve to know what's actually separating the mentally strong from everyone else.

There's a reason some people look great when things are easy and fall apart when it counts.

Why your mindset holds for one day… and then disappears for the next ten.

Why you can spend thousands on books and courses and still watch your internal world sit exactly where it was last year.

The Real Problem Isn't Your Motivation. It's Your Mental System.

People train their bodies. They train their technical skills. But most never intentionally train the six inches between their ears, even though that internal system drives your beliefs, your behaviors, and your results. The mind is naturally Velcro for negativity and Teflon for positivity, as Dr. Rick Hanson, PhD, puts it. Motivation without a trained mental system is just an expensive way to make the same mistakes faster.

Before you spend another dollar on content that treats your mind like a mood to be fixed…

You need to understand the question that started my entire system:

“Who's in charge, the thinker, or the thought?”

With an untrained mind, the thought is in charge. With a trained mind, the thinker takes the wheel. Here's the system I used to take the pen back to the story of my life:

  • A thinking-by-design framework that puts the thinker, not the thought, in charge of your response
  • A controllables system that keeps your attention on what you can actually influence
  • An identity and self-talk system that builds real self-trust instead of chasing motivation
  • A routines-and-habits system that makes high performance automatic, the same system that carried me through 30+ years of adversity

That's the system. And more motivation will never teach it to you.

Here's What Traditional Mental Training Gets Wrong:

More Motivation?

Motivation is a feeling, and feelings fade. You can watch a thousand motivational clips and still lose your footing the moment real pressure shows up.

More Information?

Reading about mental performance is not the same as training it. Knowing what to do and being able to do it under pressure are two very different skills.

More Awareness?

Insight without a framework to apply it is just reflection. Understanding what holds you back is not the same as having a repeatable way to change your response.

Your body gets trained. Your professional skills get trained. But most people are never taught how to train their mind.

That's the gap Master Your Mental Performance is built to close.

The System Behind Consistent Performance

Instead of Just Fixing Your Mindset, I Build Your Mental System:

I don't just give you inspiration, I give you the complete mental performance process I used to take the pen back to the story of my life after 30+ years of adversity.

I teach you how to train your mind, how to read your thoughts, control your response, and build a mental approach that makes consistent performance repeatable, not accidental.

I address what happens before the moment, the preparation, the routine, the self-talk, so that when pressure arrives, your mind already knows what to do. Because people don't rise to the occasion. They fall back on their training.

Once you have this system…

  • Catch unproductive thinking before it controls your response
  • Reset faster after mistakes and setbacks
  • Focus your attention on what you can actually control
  • Replace destructive self-talk with performance language
  • Build confidence from evidence instead of emotion
  • Prepare intentionally for pressure instead of hoping you show up

All it takes is the Master Your Mental Performance system. Many participants begin applying the tools immediately, while lasting mental performance is developed through consistent practice.

A Look At What You'll Train Inside The System:

  • 🧠Why your mind is Velcro for negativity and Teflon for positivity, and the 15 Seconds for Success practice that flips it
  • 🧠How to move from default thinking to thinking by design, so the thinker, not the thought, stays in charge
  • 🧠Thinking Above the Line: how to stop letting your past write your future
  • 🧠Controlling the Controllables: putting your response back in your hands
  • 🧠The Identity Statement that rewires your self-image from thermometer to thermostat, and the 'do it until you become it' principle
  • 🧠Why motivation follows movement, and how to act differently than you feel
  • 🧠Why your commitments must be greater than your feelings
  • 🧠ACE, Action Changes Everything: why anxiety hates action
  • 🧠The Five C's of Confidence and how competence becomes real self-trust
  • 🧠Championship Self-Talk: turning down the Inner Critic and giving the Inner Champion a script
  • 🧠Be where your feet are, and the WIN question (What's Important Now?) that returns your attention to the present
  • 🧠The Habit Loop, AM/PM routines, and Plan Tomorrow Tonight, so good performance becomes automatic
  • 🧠Take the Pen Back: the through-line that ties the entire system together
  • 🧠And much, much more inside the entire program…

The Mental Performance System, Step by Step:

01

Thinking By Design Instead of By Default

Why the mind defaults to negativity, and the '15 Seconds for Success' practice that retrains what your mind notices. Learn to put the thinker, not the thought, in charge.

02

The Elite Mindset

Thoughts Become Things, Thinking Above the Line, Controlling the Controllables, and gratitude as a performance skill, the shift from victim to creator.

03

Self-Awareness & Identity

Self-image as a thermostat, the Identity Statement, present-moment focus, and the WIN question (What's Important Now?), so you stay grounded when pressure pulls you out.

04

Motivation, Commitment & Action

Why motivation follows movement, Act Differently Than You Feel, and ACE (Action Changes Everything), connect your goals to a 'why' that pulls you through.

05

Self-Confidence & Self-Talk

The actions of confidence, trying vs trusting, the Five C's, the Inner Critic vs the Inner Champion, and Relentless Solution Focus, so failure becomes feedback, not identity.

06

Routines, Habits & The Pen

The Habit Loop, AM/PM routines, Plan Tomorrow Tonight, and the Prepare → Perform → Reflect → Progress cycle, tied together with the course's deepest through-line: Take the Pen Back.

Is This For You?

Master Your Mental Performance Is For You If...

  • You know you're capable of more, but your performance isn't always consistent.
  • You perform well when things are going well but struggle to reset when they're not.
  • You overthink, self-criticize, or let emotion hijack your response.
  • You've achieved success but still battle doubt, pressure, or the need to prove yourself.
  • You're an athlete who knows the mental game sometimes limits the physical game.
  • You don't need more motivation. You want a repeatable system.

Who Is Charlie Smith?

I didn't learn mental performance from a textbook. I learned it by living it.

Charlie Smith

Charlie Smith, Mental Performance Coach, Entrepreneur & Keynote Speaker

I'm a mental performance coach, entrepreneur, and keynote speaker who built this system through decades of navigating pressure, adversity, success, and change.

My journey began in a childhood marked by violence, followed by struggles with addiction and eventually recovery. Professionally, I spent more than 30 years in commercial real estate as an executive, business owner, investor, and developer, completing more than $1 billion in transactions and learning firsthand what it takes to lead, make decisions, and perform when the stakes are high.

Coaching the mental performance system

Today, I bring that real-world experience to my work in mental performance and leadership development. National organizations and professional and collegiate sports teams have trusted me to help develop their people, including Johnson & Johnson, Chicago Title, Pacific Coast Capital Partners, and NewMark Merrill.

Through all of these experiences, I learned a lesson that sits at the heart of everything I teach: our greatest adversary is often the person staring back at us in the mirror.

The good news? Mental performance can be trained. We can learn to manage our thinking, choose our response, and perform at our best, especially when pressure, adversity, and uncertainty are at their highest.

You may not control every chapter of your story. But the pen is still in your hand.

The Story Behind The System

My Story

My story is not an ordinary one. It's about showing up when life deals you a bad hand, pushing through adversity, pain, and injustice to take control and create the life you want.

By 6, the innocence of my childhood was stolen by a violent father. By 12, I'd turned to alcohol to numb the pain. I left Scarborough, Maine at 19 and never returned, building a 30-year career as an entrepreneur and real estate investor. On the outside it looked like success. On the inside, my relentless work ethic and my reliance on drugs and alcohol served the same master, staying distracted from my deep inner pain.

Through substance abuse, business failures, and broken relationships, I realized my largest adversary was myself. I reached a crossroads and decided to take responsibility for my life, and to use everything I'd learned to help others do the same.

Today I speak candidly about my journey and teach the mental performance skills that got me here. My message isn't theory born from research, it's grounded in a life I've lived and practiced every single day. I'll inspire and empower you to take ownership of the pen to the story of your life.

Charlie Smith quote: who's holding the pen
“You can't control everything that happens to you. But you have far more control over the interpretation, the response, and the next action than you've been taught. The question is whether you're going to keep handing the pen to your past, your fear, and everyone else's opinion, or take the pen back, and start writing the story of your life on purpose.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this different from what I've already tried?+

A: Therapy and books are built around reflection and awareness. This system is built around training, the practical mental performance skills, routines, self-talk, focus, and resilience, the things that make awareness actually work under pressure. Most people find this is the piece that was missing.

Q: What level is this designed for?+

A: The system works for anyone serious about improving, from young professionals and athletes through executives and leaders. The principles are the same ones I used across 30 years, simplified into a step-by-step process any dedicated person can follow.

Q: How quickly will I see results?+

A: Many people begin applying the tools immediately, while lasting mental performance is developed through consistent practice. That's the point, this is a system you build, not a quick fix.

Q: Does this work if I'm also working with a therapist or coach?+

A: Yes. This system complements that work, it doesn't replace it. Most people find that once their mental routines and self-talk improve, everything else they're doing becomes more effective.

Q: What if I'm an athlete and not a business person?+

A: This system absolutely applies to athletes. The principles I teach, focus, routines, resilience, self-talk, are universal. Whether you're competing on the field or performing in the boardroom, the mental habits that produce consistent performance are the same.

Q: What if it doesn't work for me?+

A: That's exactly what the 30-Day Master Your Mental Performance Guarantee is for. Go through the program, do the work, and if within 30 days you don't believe MYMP has given you practical tools to improve how you think, respond, and perform, contact us for a full refund.
